The PLAN ...
Each month around 20 minutes (3/6 tracks) of JJ‘s music will be released. This release strategy is mainly due to bandwidth considerations. There is a choice of 192MP3 or 96MP3 quality, engineered for CD/ ipod/ MP3 players . We should be around for a while as there is a nice catalogue of finished music and works in progress. ENJOY.

During the early and mid seventies, Australian, J. J. Francis released four albums, ‘Rock‘n‘Roll Refugee‘, ‘Breaks, Works and Thoughts‘, ‘Open Fist‘ and ‘Wassa Matta‘. They have become collectors items. Two of the songs he wrote still get airplay today; the classic ‘Simple Ben‘ featured in the legendary surf movie ‘Morning of the Earth‘ and the original hit song ‘Play Mumma Play, (Sing me a Song)‘ which has also been covered by many other artists.

LIVE CONCERT RECORDINGS BELOW (1978)
... John J Francis with DOGS IN CUSTODY (MK1)

Those who know the music from the four John J. Francis albums already know he is a songwriter of great merit. Then there were those early fans living in Sydney during the early and mid-1970's who were lucky enough to get to see him and Alan Luchetti perform which was an experience in itself. But some of the best performances were the acoustic/electric concerts mainly at the Kirk Gallery when many of the musicians from the albums joined him onstage to drop some of the best and hottest shows you were ever likely to hear. The band was affectionately known as Dogs In Custody or simply The Dogs.

We have been fortunate enough to get hold of a one-hour plus front-of-house monitoring cassette recording of an all-electric John J Francis live concert done back in late 1978. It was the first public performance JJ had given in almost two years and was a one-off event. Musicians were contacted, sound system booked, a four-hour rehearsal was had and three days later the gig. Then it was all over. It would be almost another two years before John J appeared in public performance again.

Aside from two songs from 'Open Fist', the real bonus of this concert tape is that it contains 11 previously unknown and unheard JJF songs - many up there with the best he has ever written. Because of the its length and our hosting bandwidth limits the concert has been separated into three parts and will be uploaded over the next three months (August - October). The song running order of the performance has been broken into individual tracks for easier downloading.

The Dogs band line-up with John J for this show was : Ross Ward (lead/rhythm gtr.), Phil Doherty (rhythm/lead gtr.), Tony Ansell (piano), Wayne Clare (bass) and Danny Davidson (drums).

The downloads from this site are to be considered ‘Busker‘ music.

What is
‘Cyber-Busking‘?

John J described
‘Cyber-busking‘, as... ‘Music on the web is like a big city with a busker on every street, around every corner.‘

Similar to a street busker, you are more than welcome to download and have a listen to the available music. If you like it, maybe you‘ll choose to throw some cash into the ‘virtual guitar case‘, but there is certainly no obligation to do so. We appreciate any finanicial support to complete the objective of this site. You are under no obligation whatsoever. If you can‘t afford a few bucks now or later - thats cool.
Hope everyone enjoys the music of this original OZ musician and artist.
